Combo Band
Multiple products can be packaged together using a strip of shrinkable film known as a combo band. The multi-packs created by use of a combo band can be used for "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" promotions, or to package together an established product with a trial size package of a related one. Combo bands are most often used by manufacturers of household and personal care products.
The benefits of combo bands include:
- Increased sales. Multi-packs can be used to sell slow-moving stock, or to introduce consumer to a new product they might not otherwise purchase. Combo bands are also frequently used to combine multiple units of a product into an "economy size" package.
- Re-use of products. Multi-packs can be packaged so that the UPC code of each product is covered. This allows individual units to be re-used after the multi-pack promotion ends.
- Flexibility. The high shrinkability of combo bands allows them to be used on a wide variety of container shapes and sized, including highly contoured, tapered, or otherwise irregularly shaped products.
- Packaging strength. The exceptional strength of combo bands is one of their most attractive features. The manufacturer need not worry that a multi-pack will break apart with handled normally.
Sizing
To size a combo band:
- Calculate the height cut by measuring the distance from top to bottom of band. *
- For cap overlap, allow 4-5 mm above the cap. This measurement may vary depending on the contour of the bottle and the shrinking method.
- For a bottom overlap, allow 4-6 mm. The container will likely need a "puck" system to elevate the bottle off the conveyor.
